10.1 Introduction & Basic Concepts

4.1 Introduction 

Scalar - A quantity, that involves only one value (magnitude) which is a real number, is called scalar quantity.

e.g. time, speed, distance, temperature, mass, volume, area, length, work, money, voltage, density, resistance are scalar quantities.

Vector - A quantity which invoves both value (magnitude) and direction is called vector quantity. 

e.g. displacement, velocity, force, weight, momentum, electric field intensity etc. 


Let l = staight line in a plane or 3D space


Directed Line - A line with direction is called directed line. (e.g. shown in Figure 4.1.1 below are two directed lines)

Directed Line Segment - A line segment with magnitude and direction is called directed line segment.
