1.3 Empty Set
1.3 Empty Set ( Null Set or Void Set)
A set which does not contain any element is called the empty set or the null set or the void set.
few examples of empty sets :-
Empty Set | Reason for empty set / explanation |
---|---|
A = {x : 1 < x < 2, x is a natural number} | there is no natural number between 1 and 2 |
B = {x : x2 – 2 = 0 and x is rational number} | x2 – 2 = 0 is not satisfied by any rational value of x |
C = {x : x is an even prime number greater than 2} | 2 is the only even prime number |
D = { x : x2 = 4, x is odd } | x2 = 4 is not satisfied by any odd value of x. |
Note:- Empty set is denoted by the symbol φ (read as "Phi") or { }.
